Read John 2
Today’s discussion needs the whole chapter of John 2 to shed light on why the author, John, included this tidbit about Jesus’ mindset when dealing with miracle seekers.
Focus: verses 24 and 25
24-But Jesus on His part did not entrust Himself to them, because He knew all people 25-and needed no one to bear witness about man, for He Himself knew what was in man.
John chapter 2 recounts the story of Jesus turning water into wine, His first public miracle in Cana. Things like that don’t happen, so word spread like wildfire by the lips of the servants who poured water in and drew wine out.
John goes on to tell us about Jesus’ come-apart inside the sanctuary when He drove out money-changers and merchants. His popularity became a force all on its own. Many people came to believe in Him based on what He was doing.
How overwhelming it must be to go from obscurity to notoriety in a short period of time. I imagine the disciple sitting with Jesus and learning through conversation His thoughts when questioned about this new celebrity.
The world’s attention is fickle and fleeting. The more spectacular someone appears, the more intentional the world seems to be on dimming their sparkle.
Jesus knew this better than anyone. He did not entrust Himself to any human.
I can see it now. Carnival hawkers trying to cash in on Jesus’ miracles and gatherings. Dollar signs in their eyes as they sidle up to a disciple to pitch a get-rich-quick scam.
No. Jesus did not entrust Himself to any human.
Why? Because He knew what was in man, and He didn’t need to prove it. He didn’t entrust Himself to the plans of man.
And, neither should I. Yet, I do.
God is jealous for me. He is jealous for my devotion. He is jealous for my attention, my zeal, my thoughts, my hopes, and my loyalty.
Jesus was not a “yes” man. He did not allow others to deter Him from His calling. People-pleasers may have a hard time saying ‘no’ to elders in the faith when these perhaps well-meaning mentors attempt to own the convert’s faith journey.
As a believer, I need to know what He wants me to do. Then do that. Wise counsel from trusted persons must be followed up with prayer.
Jesus entrusted Himself to no man, so I think is safe to do the same.
