A man found himself drawn to a certain mountain. He purposed in his heart to climb to the top. He moved to the base of the mountain and began to prepare. The day came for him to set out on his adventure.
As he came to the trail head leading to the summit, he encountered a traveler returning from the top. The man asked about the trip and what was seen at the peak. The traveler eagerly answered his questions and went on his way.
Intrigued, the man decided to walk the base of the mountain to see if there was another way up. He reasoned perhaps there was another way, a better way than the one described by the traveler.
He walked around the base of the mountain. He met many other travelers. They experienced the ascent up the mountain and the view from the peak. He listened to their stories. As he returned to his starting point, he paused at the foot of the mountain. He looked up to the top.
At that moment, he decided he did not need to climb it himself. He felt satisfied that he gained all he needed to know from listening to others. He packed his bags and returned home.
When I heard this story, I thought how sad it was for the man. He would never know the feel of the wind on his face as he came to the peak. His hearsay experience paled in comparison.
Most things in life are best enjoyed first hand. Some things can be described. Yet, the senses like touch, taste, and smell can’t be fully experienced through words alone.
So, it is with God’s Word.
So, it is with Scripture.
Individual study of the Word opens a line of communication from God’s Spirit. The Holy Spirit connects to the eternity set in every heart in a way nothing else can. A flame seems to ignite for the first time. This occurs when a man’s heart sees the Words with his own eyes. He tastes the sweetness of Scripture on his tongue.
